Brushing Instructions

Choose the Right Kids’ Toothbrush

Select a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head that fits comfortably in your child’s mouth. Let them pick out a kids’ toothbrush with their favorite color or character to make brushing more exciting.

Use the Right Amount of Kids’ Toothpaste

For children under three years old, use a small amount of kid-friendly toothpaste that’s about the size of a grain of rice. For children three and older, use a pea-sized amount.

Proper Brushing Technique

  • Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Use gentle, circular motions to brush the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.
  • Make sure to brush for two minutes. You can always use a timer or play a two-minute song to make it fun!

Brush Twice a Day

Encourage your child to brush in the morning and before bedtime. Supervise their brushing until they can do it well on their own, usually around age six to eight.

Flossing Instructions

When to Start Flossing

Start flossing your child’s teeth as soon as they have two teeth that touch. This typically happens around age two to three.

Use Kid-Friendly Floss

Choose flossers designed for children, which are easier for small hands to use. If using regular floss, cut a piece about 18 inches long.

Proper Flossing Technique

  • Gently slide the floss between the teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
  • Curve the floss into a C shape around each tooth and gently slide it under the gumline.
  • Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.

Floss Once a Day

Make flossing a part of your child’s bedtime routine. It’s one of the best ways to remove plaque and food particles that toothbrushes can’t reach.

Tips for Parents

Lead by Example

Let your child see you brushing and flossing your teeth. Kids are more likely to follow good habits if they see their parents doing the same.

Make it Fun

Use toothbrushes with fun designs, flavored kids’ toothpaste, and colorful flossers to make oral care enjoyable.

Create a Routine

Consistency is key! Establish a daily routine and stick to it.

Praise and Reward

Praise your child for their efforts and consider a reward chart to track their progress.

By following these steps and making oral hygiene a fun part of your child’s daily routine, you can help them develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
