What is interceptive orthodontics?
Interceptive orthodontics is all about early detection and prevention. When orthodontic treatment is done during the teen and adult years, the number of treatment options that can be utilized are limited, because the adult teeth have grown in and the jaw is done or almost done growing. Interceptive orthodontic treatment plans can look at how your child’s teeth and jaw are going to develop in the future and use that information to create a treatment plan that takes this information into account. This can help the teeth grow in straighter from the beginning and reduce your child’s treatment time.
Can you put braces on baby teeth?
Yes, your child does not have to have all of their adult teeth to begin orthodontic treatment. Even if they do not get braces when they are in elementary school, it’s a good idea to have them assessed by an orthodontist as early as possible, or around seven or eight years old. It is typically better to visit the orthodontist at a young age and be told to wait a few years than to wait until your child is older and has developed orthodontic issues that are more difficult to treat.
When would I need to do interceptive orthodontics?
When you make an orthodontic appointment for your child, the teeth and jaw are examined and the orthodontist will determine if your child needs interceptive orthodontics. It may be decided that they need one or both of their jaws expanded to create more space for teeth. It’s also not uncommon for a baby tooth to be removed early so an adult tooth can grow in properly, or for a space maintainer to be utilized to keep adult teeth from crowding each other. Whatever the case may be, our team will be happy to work with you and your child to create the best orthodontic treatment plan for them.
