A new year is a great time to reset routines — especially the ones that help your child keep a strong, healthy smile. At Storybook Smiles Children’s Dentistry in Tyler, TX, Dr. Dylan Patrick knows that little habits add up. That’s why we focus on realistic ways to help families keep brushing, flossing, and checkups on track all year long.
You don’t need a total overhaul to build a healthy routine — just a few consistent steps that work for your family’s schedule. With some gentle reminders, the right tools, and a bit of encouragement, even busy mornings can become a little smoother.
Start with a Routine That Sticks
Dental habits are easier to build when they happen at the same time every day. For kids, that often means brushing after breakfast and again before bed. Making it part of their routine — like putting on shoes or picking out pajamas — helps them expect it (and maybe even look forward to it).
Helpful tip: Most children still need help brushing well until they’re 6 or 7 years old. A good goal? Let your child take the lead in the morning, but have a parent step in at night to make sure the job is done right.
Want an easy way to stay on track? Use a monthly brushing chart to check off morning and evening sessions. It’s a fun visual that helps kids see their progress and take ownership of the habit.
Brush and Floss (and Don’t Forget the Tongue)
Aim for two minutes, twice a day, with a soft-bristled brush. Add in floss once a day — especially in the evening — to keep food and plaque from getting stuck between teeth. Floss picks can make it easier for both parents and kids.
Also, don’t forget the tongue! A quick swipe with a brush or tongue cleaner helps remove bacteria and keeps breath fresher.
Keep Teeth Clean After Meds and Treats
If your child takes melatonin or any nighttime medicine, make sure to brush again after. Some medications — especially in gummy or liquid form — can cling to teeth and lead to decay over time.
And try not to let kids go to bed with milk, juice, or snacks. Even a little sugar sitting on teeth overnight can start causing trouble.
Water Is Your Friend
Encourage water between meals and after snacks. It rinses away food, helps saliva do its job, and keeps the mouth from feeling dry. If your child resists plain water, try a fun water bottle or silly straw — it can help build a healthy habit without the need for juice or sports drinks.
Make Regular Dental Visits Part of the Year
Routine visits every six months help us spot issues early and keep your child’s teeth healthy as they grow. Even if everything looks great at home, those check-ins matter — and they give kids a chance to build a positive relationship with the dentist.
If it’s been a while since your child’s last visit, now is the perfect time to get back on the calendar.
