Dental Sealants in Tyler, TX
Dental sealants are thin, clear coatings that cover the top of each molar and act as an invisible barrier between the tooth and harmful bacteria. They are an excellent preventive service for both kids and adults who are looking for ways to reduce their chances of developing tooth decay and enhance their overall oral health. At what age should kids get dental sealants?
Dental sealants are placed over molars, and the first set of molars typically grow in around age six or seven. When your child’s first set of molars comes in, we can let you know, and their first set of sealants can be placed. The second set of molars typically grow in around age eleven or twelve, and additional sealants can be placed on these teeth as well. During routine dental visits, we will check your child’s sealants to ensure that they still look great. When they need to be removed, our team will let you know, and new sealants can be placed if requested.
Are dental sealants better than fluoride treatments?
Neither preventive service is better than the other, and we often recommend that patients receive both treatments when possible. Dental sealants are placed over teeth and typically do not need to be modified or replaced for anywhere from seven to ten years. Fluoride treatments involve applying fluoride varnish to the teeth to strengthen the tooth enamel, and they can be scheduled occasionally or added to every routine visit. Both services are intended to help prevent tooth decay and keep your child’s smile happy and healthy!
Are dental sealants covered by insurance?
Most children’s dental insurance and Medicaid plans cover dental sealants completely or cover the majority of the cost. Even if your child is not covered for dental sealants, they are a service that tends to be relatively inexpensive to cover out-of-pocket, and they are a great investment in terms of avoiding tooth decay and dental fillings.
