Helping Kids Keep Their Smiles Cavity-Free
Good daily oral hygiene is the foundation of a healthy smile. Whether your little one still needs assistance brushing their teeth or they are old enough to practice good dental habits themselves, brushing twice per day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning in between teeth is the gold standard for keeping cavities at bay. Depending on your child’s needs and risk for tooth decay, we may also recommend prescription toothpaste with a higher concentration of fluoride for additional protection.

Are dental sealants better than fluoride treatments?
Neither preventive service is better than the other, and we often recommend that patients receive both treatments when possible. Dental sealants are placed over teeth and typically do not need to be modified or replaced for anywhere from seven to ten years. Fluoride treatments involve applying fluoride varnish to the teeth to strengthen the tooth enamel, and they can be scheduled occasionally or added to every routine visit. Both services are intended to help prevent tooth decay and keep your child’s smile happy and healthy!
Regular dental visits are also an important addition to a great at-home oral care routine. During these appointments, our team can look for early signs of decay and identify areas that may benefit from additional protection. Preventive care may include:
- Professional fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel
- Dental sealants to protect the grooves and pits of back teeth
- Prescription toothpaste for children at higher risk for cavities
- Personalized recommendations for brushing, flossing, and nutrition
Dental sealants are especially helpful for protecting the chewing surfaces of permanent molars, where food and bacteria can become trapped. Combined with fluoride and good home care, sealants can give children an added layer of defense against cavities.

Healthy Habits at Home
Cavity prevention doesn’t stop when your child leaves our office. Parents and caregivers play an important role in helping children develop habits that support healthy teeth. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks, encouraging water, chewing sugar-free gum, and making brushing and flossing part of the daily routine can all help reduce the risk of decay.
Certain cavity-fighting candies and products containing xylitol may also be appropriate for some children. These products can encourage saliva flow and may help reduce the effects of cavity-causing bacteria. Interested in learning more? Please ask our team for more information at your child’s next visit.

Preventing Cavities Before They Get Worse
If your child develops early or active tooth decay, we can discuss treatment options based on their individual needs. In appropriate cases, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) may be used to help slow or stop the progression of certain cavities. This minimally invasive option can be useful in situations where the decay isn’t developed enough for a filling. Our goal is to catch dental concerns early and provide care that helps protect your child’s developing smile.
